Accredited Adviser in Insurance (AAI®)

The Accredited Adviser in Insurance program gives you the tools you need to establish a clear professional advantage in the marketplace and fulfill your commitment to customer service. In today’s increasingly complex property-casualty insurance marketplace, only producers with in-depth insurance knowledge and a strong focus on customer service have a competitive edge. AAI gives you the professional education you need.

Passing the required AAI exams earns the Accredited Adviser in Insurance designation.

New! Ethics requirement. The Institutes believe ethical decision making skills are essential to the practice of insurance. Starting January 2011, all designation program participants must complete either Ethical Guidelines for Insurance Professionals (for all programs except CPCU) or the CPCU program’s Ethics and the CPCU Code of Professional Conduct. The following courses are required to earn the Accredited Adviser in Insurance (AAI) designation:

AAI 81—Foundations of Insurance Production: The insurance business—an overview; Insurance and the legal system; Risk management and the producer; Insurance sales and account development; Homeowners insurance; Personal automobile insurance; Other personal insurance; Personal financial planning; Commercial property insurance Part I and Part II; Business income and extra expense insurance; and Commercial inland and ocean marine insurance

AAI 82—Multiple-Lines Insurance Production: Commercial general liability insurance Part I and Part II; Commercial automobile insurance; Garage and motor carrier insurance; Commercial crime insurance; Businessowners insurance; Other commercial coverages; Workers compensation and employers liability insurance; Specialty insurance; Commercial excess and umbrella liability insurance; and Surety bonds

AAI 83—Agency Operations and Sales Management: Agency Formation/Environment, Organizational Management, Agency Management, Personal Production Plans, Producer-Insurer Relations, Public Image of the Agency, Agency Growth/Customer Communications, Market Segmentation/Product Targeting, the Automated Agency, Client Services, Agency Financial Management

Program Options: The Accredited Adviser in Insurance designation program is available as a self-study program via printed textbooks and course guides. AAI is also offered in a seminar format by certain state insurance associations. AAI is also offered in a segmented format, which breaks each course into three pieces.

Course Sequence: It is best to take AAI 81 before taking AAI 82. AAI 83 may be taken at any time.

Exam Information: AAI exams are offered at Institute-approved on–site testing locations and Prometric Testing Centers.

If you prefer, you can approach your AAI studies in a modular format consisting of a series of shorter study segments. You can do this by attending state-sponsored AAI seminars. Contact your state association education coordinator for further information about AAI seminars and segmented exams.

AAI full-length exams consist of 85 objective questions and examinees have two hours to complete the exam. AAI segmented exams consist of between 15-50 objective questions, depending on the course and segment, and examinees have 60 minutes to complete each exam.

Waiver Information

  • If you have passed AINS 21, 22, and 23, the AAI 81 exam requirement is waived.
  • If you have passed CPCU 551, 552, and 553; or if you have passed CPCU 551, 552, and 555, the AAI 81 exam requirement is waived.
  • If you have completed Accredited Customer Service Representative (ACSR) courses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, and 11, the AAI 81B segmented exam requirement is waived.
  • If you have completed Accredited Customer Service Representative (ACSR) courses 4,5,6,7,8, and 9, the AAI 82A segmented exam requirement is waived.
  • A waiver is available for AAI 81 if you hold the CIC designation. To apply for this waiver, use this waiver form.
  • NOTE: Non-Institute courses or designations are subject to a $150 application fee per waiver.
