Insurance Executive Development (IED) Program
October 4-16, 2009
$18,000 per person
$16,000 per person where two or more people are from the same company

Leaders of Tomorrow Must Be Skilled Managers of People and Processes. Designed especially for the industry’s rising stars, this intensive program combines a solid foundation of core business functions with the real-world knowledge needed to manage people and processes in the context of the tactical implementation of corporate strategic initiatives. The program emphasizes organizational issues and personal leadership development.

How You Will Benefit
By participating in the IED program, you will:

Who Should Attend
The typical IED candidate is a regional or business unit manager in a functional area (i.e., claims, underwriting, information technology, or human resources) at the vice president, manager, or director level. The candidate has operational and tactical responsibilities, including the development of implementation strategies.

Program Content

The modules in the IED program focus on the following areas:

Managerial Leadership
Leadership involves inspiring and developing people as you mobilize them toward accomplishing goals. Your success as a leader—throughout your career—requires learning continually from experience through the disciplined integration of action and reflection.

Cross-Functional Management
Effective management requires a solid understanding of all areas of business. Management sessions taught by Wharton faculty help you enhance your business instincts and extend your knowledge. The diverse range of subjects includes technology management, financial management, and change management.

Personal Development
Your unique management style is as important to your career as your technical knowledge, so the IED program addresses the soft skills that are critical to your success. Participants learn a systematic process for approaching all types of negotiations. And a hands-on workshop focuses attention on the key success factors for strategic planning under conditions of uncertainty. Additional sessions in effective communications, ethics, creating shareholder value, and mergers and acquisitions round out this module.

Specific topic areas addressed: leadership dynamics, marketing strategy, strategic finance, shareholder value, managing technology and innovation, implementing strategy, and managing people.

Participants also take part in a computer-assisted learning experience. The model provides an opportunity for simulated interaction among various departments within an organization. It allows participants to experiment with the decision-making processes involved in operating an insurance company and to test boundaries.

A full-day strategic visioning workshop provides a practical opportunity for participants to exercise the combination of core business learning and holistic personal development.
