Associate in Claims (AIC) Program

Improve your technical claim handling ability. Claim professionals handle a wide variety of claims, including property, auto, workers compensation, and bodily injury claims. Earning the AIC designation can improve your technical claim handling abilities as well as your communication and negotiation skills. You can take the standard multiline approach, which covers personal lines as well as commercial lines property and liability, or you can choose among four specialty paths if one of them would better suit your career needs.

The AIC program was developed with the technical and financial assistance of the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters. Many companies use it as an official part of their claims training programs.

Required Courses

Choose one of the following five paths to earn the AIC designation:

Multiline: AIC 33, 34, 35, and 36

Personal Lines Auto and Liability: AIC 33, 34, and 36, plus either CPCU 553, 555 or INS 22

Personal Lines Homeowners: AIC 33, 35, and 36, plus either CPCU 553, 555 or INS 22

Commercial Lines Liability: AIC 33, 34, 36, and CPCU 552

Commercial Lines Property: AIC 33, 35, 36, and CPCU 551

Course Descriptions

AIC 33—Claim Handling Principles and Practices: Activities in the claim process, basic investigation, fraud detection, good faith claim handling, ethics, negotiation skills and litigation management.

AIC 34—Workers' Compensation and Managing Bodily Injury Claims: Workers’ Compensation System, Compensability, Statutory Benefits, Bodily Injury Claim Management, Injury and Treatment Evaluation, Impairment and Disability, Rehabilitation, Low Back Injury Claims, Medical Investigation, and Assessing Treatments and Disability

AIC 35—Property Loss Adjusting: Persons/Property Insured, Causes of Loss, Loss Adjusting Process and Procedures, Fraud, Residential Construction, Preparing Estimates, Merchandise/Time Element Loss, Auto Physical Damage, and Contractor’s Equipment.

AIC 36—Liability Claim Practices: Liability Investigation; Evaluation of Damages; Litigation Management; Auto/Home/Commercial Liability and Coverage Issues; Settlement & ADR Strategies; Case Studies

CPCU 551—Commercial Property Risk Management and Insurance

CPCU 552—Commercial Liability Risk Management and Insurance

CPCU 553—Survey of Personal Risk Management, Insurance, and Financial Planning

CPCU 555—Personal Risk Management and Property-Liability Insurance

INS 22—Personal Insurance

Course sequence: It is best to take AIC 33 first.

Exam Type

AIC 33/34/35/36, INS 22: Eighty-five computer-administered, objective (multiple-choice) questions. Time allotted: 2 hours.

CPCU 551, 552, 555: Computer-administered essay. Time allotted: 3 hours.
CPCU553: Computer-administered objective. Time allotted: 3 hours.
